No imminent threats from Russia or China justify a takeover and NATO allies are already bolstering Arctic security. Threatening tariffs on Denmark and others divides us, benefiting adversaries like Putin and Xi. Greenland’s sovereignty isn’t negotiable. Moreover, under the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement (still in force as part of NATO commitments), the US already has broad rights to construct, install, maintain, and operate military bases across the island, house personnel, and freely move ships, aircraft, and forces by land, sea, and air—without rent or compensation to Denmark. We can place as many troops or assets as needed for defense purposes right now, in coordination with our allies. And the United States? You have a base there, but you have chosen to remove rather than add soldiers.
